JUDO YUKON NCCP DOJO ASSISTANT COURSE
  7 – 8 JANUARY 2012

Shiroumakai Judo Club was the venue for the first ever Dojo Assistant (DA) course held in Whitehorse under the NEW NCCP program! The course conductor and learning facilitator was Judo Yukon's Technical Advisor John Huntley from Aberdeen Judo in Kamloops BC. Participants were actively engaged in this 2 full filled day weekend course. The integrated theory and technical course took place in the classroom and on the mats at the Vanier school. Subject: a question from Germany
To: judoyukon@gmail.com

Dear  Judoka!

First: Please excuse my very bad English!!! I hope you understand what I try to explaine :-[

Who I am?
My name is Marion, I am the mum of three Judoka and I am writing the judo newspaper for our Judo Club  PSV Meiningen in Germany. It is only for our members, most for the kids and youth but also for parents and coaches.

My next theme is: Judo all over the world...

So I thought I mail some clubs all over the world and ask them if the coaches or some of the kids could write a little article about Judo for us.

You could write: start to do Judo with the age of...  why Judo... if Judo change your life...
what techniques you like most..
an example of the training, activities, competitions, if many people do Judo in your country and so on...

We would be very happy if you would do that!!!!!

Best wishes,

Marion Lehmann

World Judo Day is October 28th.

The International Judo Federation recently announced the creation of a World Judo Day. This annual day of awareness about judo and its values will be held yearly on October 28th which coincides with Jigoro Kano’s birthday.

The goal of the day is to promote the values that grow naturally in the dojo and on the mat and to promote the need for these values to find a favorable echo in everyday life and beyond that, in the society.

The IJF choose the value of RESPECT as the main theme of the first World Judo Day. Judo Yukon members are encouraged to participate in this year’s World Judo Day by visiting the World Judo Day website for ideas and resources.

Judo Yukon membership fee increase.

Judo Canada, with the support of Judo Yukon and other member territorial and provincial sport organizations, is committed to the development and leadership of Judo across Canada. In an effort to maintain existing levels of service and further enhance offerings to the membership, there will be an increase in the fees charged by Judo Canada for the 2011/12 season. Membership fees collected by Judo Yukon will increase for the season starting on September 1, 2011 and ending August 31, 2012. This is an increase of $15 from last year's fee of $60 to 2011/2012 season of $75.

This increase of fees by Judo Canada is in support of the following two goals:

  1. Allow Judo Canada to be less dependent on partners' funding.
  2. Allow Judo Canada to develop/work on programs not funded by its partners.

This increase in fees will further the development programs and opportunities of athletes, coaches, and officials across Canada, as well as enhance the level of service that the Judo Canada office will be able to provide to their members.

Concussions

Concussions have become the most watched injury in contact sports, especially in football and hockey. Research indicates that, when judoka fail to practice proper breakfall procedures, either because they do not diligently practice them or refuse to take a breakfall when being thrown in an effort to prevent an opponent from scoring, they are prone to concussions. Since concussions are the major source of injury among younger judoka (under age 17), parents and instructors need to be congnizant of the possibility and how to deal with concussions. Instructors will prevent further participation in strenous activities, such as randori, once a student has had an injury until it can be assessed. More information about concussions is available in the following document (pdf).

2011 Canadian Judo Championships

Senior, Kata, Masters - 2011 Canadian Judo Championships - Edmonton, Alberta.

For results, click here.

Hi everybody – John Hawthorne and I participated in the Kata category at the Canadian Judo Championships in Edmonton on Saturday, May 21. Overall, we placed 4th in Katame no Kata  (or another way of putting it -last) A team from Quebec placed first with second and third awarded BC and Saskatchewan respectively.

Our intent was to do well by 1st to demonstrate a kata on the mat (it just happen to be the nationals), 2nd - to get the sequence correct, 3rd - and to have fun and see what kata competion is all about ( maybe not all 3 points in that order). Given that all 3 objectives were met - we were pleased and content with our results.

Katame no Kata (forms of grappling on the ground) is composed of three groups of grappling techniques each with five representative techniques. - the group consists of hold downs, chokes and joint locks. John was the tori (performing the techniques) and so I was the uke (receiving the techniques). John's goal was to demonstrate the methods of control on me while my objective was show my escapes. As in all kata this preceded by a formal beginning movement and concluded by a closing ceremony (essentialy a beginning movement but in reverse order).

The 5 Judges awarded our points on their official scoring sheet. The high score and the low score are discarded. The total score of the three remaining judges awarded us the final score of 318.
Each technique and open and closing ceremonies and are evaluated with a maximum positive score of 10 points. The positive score is decreased by mistakes. The judges also evaluated our kata for fluidity, course and rhythm (included the rei). So with a total of 15 techniques, 2 ceremonies and 1 overall - let's call it - kata impression - the maximum score could be 180 points therefore the 3 judges total maximum score is 540 points.

The judge's sole objective was the following: the evaluation of every technique of Kata has to consider the principle and the opportunity of execution: the evaluation (included the open and close ceremony) has to be comprehensive. To put this perspective, the first place winners received a total score of 408 points or 75% mark or a B (if you're in school). I don't think anyone has scored that perfect 10 or in our case 540 for katame no kata in any tournament around the world. The first place winners are off to the kata world championships in Frankfurt in mid-June and we wish them well.

As we would expect, the level of competition was very high, infact John made the observation that he was the only brown belt there or so he thought untill I pointed out there another brown belt from Alberta competing in another kata. So to us, we found the caliber of these teams to be very high. So it was a good experience, and so next time we hope to score better than 318.

Dan

Small team Yukon came home with 6 trophies from 2011 Alaska State Judo Championships

The 2011 Alaska State Judo Championships were held Saturday, March 26th at Dimond High School in Anchorage. Well over 100 contestants came from as far north as Fairbanks, as far South as Ketchikan, with a few from Canada to test their grappling skills in Alaska largest Judo tournament. The contestants ranged in age from 5 to over 50 years old, with excellent skill shown throughout.

Grueling matches were fought from 9:30 in the morning, starting with the delightful 5-6 year old divisions, ending in the evening with the senior men’s divisions. As the day progressed, the ages and intensities of the competitors increased. Each match was both a physical test of skill and a mental game where the contests sought to off balance their opponents both physically and mentally. A little bit of miss applied force or a step at the wrong time often resulted in the contestant being forcefully thrown from their feet to their back for a full point, ending the match. When a throw was not considered good enough for a full point (i.e. it was lacking speed, force, control, or the contestant landing mostly on their back) the matches continued in ground work with the contestants trying to show superior control with pins, or for the older contestants, by bring their opponents into submission with joint locks or strangulation techniques.

I have been involved with Judo in Alaska since 1997, and I don’t remember a time, before this year, that a young child has won the best technique award for Boy’s or Girl’s. This year both awards (best technique Boy’s and best technique Girl’s) were taken by eight year olds. Isaiah Dempsey and Claire Rhyneer, both of Anchorage Dojo, won the awards with spectacular displays of skill.

Sean Stark, Dan Poelman, Richard Zebruck & Jerry Miller.

Sean and I demonstrated our Katame No Kata Saturday morning with other teams from Alaska in 2 other Kata categories. Given the short amount time we practiced, we were pleased with our performance and did well. This was followed by the opening ceremonies with the official bow-in, introduction of the clubs and teams (10) with over 100 participants over all Alaska and us team Yukon of 4. There were a lot of kids and we stayed and watched the whole morning and part of the afternoon before Jerry started his 1st match. Jerry competed really well in first "outside' tournament and won all his matches with Ippons (full points) and take honors of first place. It was a complement to hear from other senseis talking about how impressed they were Jerry's great performance on his arsenal of gripping and combination of techniques. Once the Juniors completed in the late afternoon, there were team competions and award ceremonies. There were exciting matches in the senior division with some matches won and some lost by team Yukon members. Overall it was a great and fun experience. the Alaskans were enthusiastic, very kind and showed us great hospitality.

JUDO BC NCCP DOJO INSTRUCTOR COURSE
MARCH 25 – 27, 2011

Aberdeen Judo was the venue for the first ever Dojo Instructor course held in BC under the NEW NCCP program! Course co-conductors were Judo BC Learning Facilitators Bruce Fingarson (Delta Kaigan Judo) & John Huntley (Aberdeen Judo). Twelve instructors took part in the 28 hour course, coming from diverse regions including the lower mainland, Kootenays, Okanagan, northern region and two instructors  from Whitehorse, Yukon! The classroom and on-mat sessions were both held in the dojo, and our ‘toy box’ was raided as the ‘teaching groups’ used their imagination for the various warm-up and exercise routines – including bean bags, Swiss Balls, medicine balls, surgical tubing, traffic cones, etc.! NCCP - Coaching and Leading Effectively

Learning Facilitator: Tracey Bilsky and Kathryn Zrum

This module focused on applying intervention techniques that enhance learning with the aim to improve athletes’ performance and to promote group and skill development.  Coaches learned how to promote a positive image of sport and model the image to athletes and those supporting their performance.  The module provided coaches with a process that they can use to deliver clear messages and explanations when communicating with athletes and those supporting their performance. Coaches also identified opportunities to interact with all athletes and use feedback to improve and correct performance and behavior.

John Hawthorne and Dane Vasseur participated in this coaching course at the Canada Games Centre – Boardroom.

NCCP Dojo Assistant Course (Attended by John Hawthorne and Robert Bellon)
June 19th-20th, Kamloops
Submitted by: John Huntley, NCCP Facilitator

Fifteen participants attended the first NEW NCCP Dojo Assistant course held in British Columbia. On-mat sessions were held at Aberdeen Judo Academy, with classroom sessions conducted off-site in a very comfortable setting.

Learning Facilitators for the 16 hour course were Russ Ko, John Huntley, Bruce Fingarson & Bruce Kamstra.
The content for the NEW Dojo Assistant designation is a combined Theory & Technical course as opposed to the single course format in the past and the all new workbooks and related reference materials have been combined to provide an excellent guide!

Classroom sessions covered Ethical Coaching, planning for Safety & Liability and Judo Philosophical Principles. These activities were done in small group design, with each group presenting their findings to the rest of the assembly.
On-mat sessions had everyone doing new and innovative warm-up exercises & technique drills – as learning activities followed by a number of topics demonstrated by coach candidates who had earlier in the course picked a topic they were prepared to cover.

The course manuals with pertinent material for all instructors made the learning curve manageable, and will be a handy reference in coming judo seasons!

2010 Junior Nationals - results

Everyone did their best by getting here and making their weights.

Friday, Lara fought in U17 F70 kg with a division of 10 competitors.
Her first fight, against BC's Kirsti Roots ikkyu (brown belt) had Lara quite nervous. Having never fought a brown belt before was a challenge (mentally), and she was dominated into osaewaza (pinning or holddown techniques) for ippon (full point).

After the first fight, Lara was able to settle down and come out against her second opponent with much more confidence. She came out with spirit & countered her opponent twice, once for yuko (small point), the second for ippon (full point).

Lara's third fight vs Haley Walz from Saskatchewan nikyu (blue belt) when about 1:30 before Lara was thrown with a nicely executed seoitoshi ( a shoulder throw) for ippon (full point).

FYI - Kirsti Roots won gold & Haley Walz bronze in this category.

Saturday was a bit more hectic with three athlete's competing, one two of four mats luckily.

Eric, fighting in U15 M55 kg (15 competitors) was the third match on mat A vs Mark Wulczynski of Ontario sankyu (green belt). Again, the first fight jitters played a large part in the swing of this fight, yet Erik did go into 1:40 seconds before having his uchimata (a leg throw) entry countered for ippon (full point).

Eric's second match, vs BC,s Brandon Slooyer ikkyu (brown belt), Eric again was able to attain his grip & attack, this time with his drop seoinage (a shoulder throw), he was blocked & his opponent was able to take the fight into osaewaza (holddown techniques), for ippon (full point).

Camila, fighting U15 F48 kg (11 competitors) was the fifth match on mat B vs BC's Juliane Romero sankyu (green belt). Once again the nerves won over Camila and she was muscled to the mat (without score) to (holddown techniques) untill ippon
(full point).

Camila's second match vs an Ontario nikyu (blue belt), was over quite quick with an ippon
(full point) seoitoshi (a shoulder throw) by the Ontario fighter.

Andrew competing in U15 M42 kg, had a decent draw of the seven entries in his category being put into a pool system of three. (thus one win would put him into the bro
His first fight against Ontario's Camreon Burgess nikyu (blue belt) was over in seconds as Andrew was caught by the old grip & go maneuver.

Andrew's second match vs Quebec's Samuel Rousseau ikkyu (brown belt) went better, lasting 45 seconds. Andrew was thrown first for yuko (small point), then a second time for ippon (full point).

FYI- Quebec's Rousseau won gold, while Ontario's Burgess won bronze.

All competiors learned an invaluable lesson of how inexperience & nerves play a major part of these events. I hope we can take this experience to work towards the next competition next year. Everyone commented they wished they could have another fight....

Today we watch the U20 divisions, then prepare for Mondays training camp (where the fun really begins)

Yours in judo,
